The meaning of “la fête” (partying) for people who learn French in France

A most interesting debate at ELFCA language school in south of France

Recently a group of advanced students of French have prepared a debate on the meaning of “la fête”, a very fashionable thema in all social backgrounds in France, even though the name often changes for its slang translation “la teuf”. And obviously it was indeed a most important issue for the people of the six countries represented in the group: Austria, Italy, Canada, Germany, USA, and Spain, plus France with the teacher! A very interesting comparison of traditional and new ways of entertaining oneself and one’s friends, and a conclusion: nowhere else but in France is food so essential in partying!

Last Saturday was Gardens Day in France and most towns organized visits to public or private gardens and parks; in Hyeres, the very exotic Jardin Olbius Riquier was the star of the event, with of course gardeners explaining the different trees, flowers and plants, but also groups of dancers and musicians. But what amused most the visitors was the peacocks’show, for these incredible birds were obviously greedy for applause, and they kept spreading their fans among the performers! “Fascinating, but what an atrocious cry these animals have!” was the comment of American girls who study French language in the South of France.
