Shrove Tuesday pastries for students at French language school

Foreigners who learn French in France have a sweet tooth

Once again Shrove Tuesday tradition was perpetuated at French language school. After lunch the cheerful group of students who were planning their afternoon activities, preparing debates or chatting on the internet were happily surprised to be offered oreillettes, airy fritters subtly flavoured with orange flower water and sprinkled with icing sugar. The general opinion was summed up by greedy Malaisian: “February’s a good month to study French in Provence!”

Special Wednesday at French language school in Provence

“No ham sandwich today” decides Asian student

Following Shrove Tuesday and its Provencal oreillettes, another custom puzzled some students at French language school. At the break, the cook seriously addressed a girl ordering her lunch: “No ham today, it’s Ash Wednesday!” The student was totally astonished: “I know it’s Wednesday, but why ash and why no ham?” After being explained the religious meaning of the day, she realized the cook was actually joking…..but she decided to change to tuna to conform to the tradition, as part of her French immersion program!

The code has changed for students at French language school in Provence

Cinema as part of French immersion program

An excellent comedy is on almost everywhere in France at the moment: Daniele Thompson’s last movie, entitled “le code a change”, wins all critics’ praises, and obviously spectators are all but disappointed by this satire of upper middle class, funny, incisive, but also sometimes serious and even accusatory. A bit difficult to understand but totally enjoyable, said student taking French language course on the Riviera.

Learners of French in France love Mozart

Opera evening for students taking French language course in Provence

Once upon a time there was a shepherdess named Bastienne who felt abandoned by her beloved Bastien. She called for help the village wizard Colas who reassured her: Bastien still loved her tenderly, he was just a bit flighty….This sugary love story is the framework of Mozart’s first opera, which he composed at the age of twelve. Although the songs were in German, the narrative was in French and the spectacle was really appreciated by students participating to French language program in the South.

Japanese studying French in France discovers artichoke

“C’est joli!” says participant to French language immersion program

A girl recently experienced a delicacy which is a “must” in Italian and Provencal cuisine, but obviously not very well known in Japan yet. Her host family served her artichokes, and her reaction was quite surprising: although she liked the taste, what delighted her most was the look of the vegetable. “C’est joli!” (it’s pretty) were her exact word;  a proof that when it comes to gastronomy, the eyes are just as important as the mouth, thought teacher at French language school in Provence.
