When you are here, why not rent a car with a few other students for the week-end and visit what we call "l'arrière-pays"? Plenty of lovely villages all different and cultivating their specificities and traditions such as Pierrefeu and its wine, Cogolin and its pipe manufacture, Vals and its fountains, Entrecasteaux, its castle and its park and so many more. On a beautiful January Sunday, black truffle was traditionally celebrated in Aups with an open market offering truffles of all sizes of course, but also many “derived products”: truffled flavoured olive oil, pate, and even chocolate! And a demonstration of “black diamond” searching by an astonishing sow named Pepette rose the enthusiasm and liking of all spectators, among which Elfca students who learn French in South of France.

Why do all supermarkets advertise at the same time for frying pans, cider and Grand Marnier at very special prices? wondered  a foreign student, puzzled by what he thought was a coincidence. Teacher at French language school had to explain that 2nd February was Chandeleur, (Candlemas), and that a French tradition requires that on that special day everyone eats crepes(pancakes). Of course the gourmets and the gourmands like to flambé theirs with Grand Marnier or rhum, and it is well known that the best drink with crepes is cider! “Hope my host family will carry on the tradition” said student learning French in south of France.

Recently, a Hyerois singer named Quentin qualified for the final of  very popular TV contest Star academy. All the (young) inhabitants of Hyeres area, in Provence d’Azur, were very excited by the prospect of their fellow-citizen becoming famous, and several support meetings were organized and gathered thousands of enthusiastic fans. Among them of course one could find quite a few foreigners who study French in the South of France at Elfca.

Travellers from outside EU may encounter difficulties in using their own electrical or electronic equipments such as hair dryer or computer if they don’t think of taking with them an adaptor for their own plugs: obviously European plugs are different from theAmerican ones and although in France it’s easy enough to buy something that will adapt French plugs to the rest of the world, it doesn’t work so well the other way round and it can  become a real headache to find the right stuff! Thus, better take your precautions before leaving your country  to come and learn French in France on an immersion course!

There’s a major difference between South of France and the rest of the country, according to winter gourmets: on 2nd February most French people share a cake made of flaky pastry filled with slighly bitter almond cream, while in Provence everybody will tell you that the only true “gateau des Rois” is a crown shaped brioche topped with sugar and candied fruits; but the majority of those who learn French in the South of France at Elfca recently elected the marzipan galette as their favourite!

It may sound strange, but foreign students who learn French in France find it really difficult to pronounce the word “agrafeuse”. Of course, this may not appear a vital issue, but one wouldn’t believe how often students of French language need one,  and thus have to pronounce the awful word! A very interesting discussion the other day at French language school as a German ingenieur reported about climatic changes: although everyone was delighted by the marvellous sunny winter that blesses French Riviera, all the participants were conscious that drought had become a serious problem and had ideas about how to save water and protect our precious environment. “A good mark for everyone” was the conclusion of teacher at French language school.
